Preparing for Travel can be exciting and at the same time may bring unique challenges. With preparation and planning ahead suited to your child/ family member’s needs, can make travel manageable and as stress free as possible. In this blog we explore a Travel Preparation checklist to help in making the journey predictable, and as stress free as possible for everyone involved. 

1. Prepare with Visuals 

  • Create a social story about the trip 
  • Make a visual schedule of daily activities 
  • Show pictures or videos of where you’re going (e.g., hotel, airport, relatives) 
  • Review the story and schedule daily before the trip 

2. Pack Comfort & Sensory Supports 

  • Favorite toy/stuffed animal 
  • Sensory items (e.g., fidgets, favourite blanket etc) 
  • Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs 
  • Preferred snacks and drinks 
  • Extra clothes (in case of spills or sensory discomfort) 

3. Practice and Role-Play 

  • Pretend play travel scenarios (car ride, airport security, standing in line, hotel check-in) 
  • Practice wearing seatbelts, headphones, or masks if needed 
  • Teach and practice safety skills (e.g., staying close, asking for help) 

4. Plan for Routines and Breaks 

  • Keep a consistent wake-up and bedtime schedule when possible 
  • Plan for quiet breaks and downtime 
  • Identify safe spots or quiet areas at your destination 

5. Prepare Important Info & Documents 

  • ID bracelet or card with your contact info and child’s needs 
  • Medical documents (if needed) 
  • List of your child’s triggers and calming strategies 
  • A printed copy of the visual schedule/social story 

6. Communicate with Others 

  • Let airlines, hotels, or hosts know about any special accommodations 
  • Tell travel companions how to support your child if needed 
  • Prepare siblings or other children about expectations and roles
